To create a climate of public awareness and responsibility for meeting the needs and concerns of the City’s youth, and to be involved with community issues. To promote youth involvement in government and civic duties to become productive citizens in the future. To provide the means by which the City’s youth can be heard from and included in government. To plan, sponsor, and coordinate appropriate youth programs, activities, and events in the City of LaGrange

Selection Process

There is an interview process consisting of advisors, current members, and at times City Employees like Director of HR. If less than 24 total students apply, all will get in.  If over 24, then we try to keep it even between 12 seniors and 12 juniors if possible.

Words of advice to share with cities considering the establishment of a youth council

Interaction and passion from the members themselves is key.  So interviewing people and getting those most interested can make or break a year. Also hoping the leadership (both adult and student led) is energetic and goes above and beyond really helps.

Event Description

Our Youth Council worked with United Way’s Success by Six program to create a series of videos to promote literacy in children.  This project was led by the Mentorship Committee who decided to read children’s books on camera for kids to watch on social media.  This project can help any kid out there wanted to learn to read promote education for many years to come.
