Cities & Districts

Cities... the Heart and Soul of Georgia

It is in the cities where the foundations of our economy are laid, where our identity as a people is anchored, and where we live, work, play and enrich our lives.

    • Cities make up just 9% of the state's overall land area, but contain 45% of the state's total population.
    • Cities are dense economic and cultural hubs that provide 70% of jobs in Georgia.
    • Cities see their population increase by 24% in the daytime due to commuting, providing services to both their "daytime population" and their resident population.
The Value of Cities

GMA Districts

City officials are encouraged to participate in GMA activities at the district level and to get to know their district staff representative.

    • Spring listening sessions provide an opportunity to receive a briefing on the recently completed legislative session and suggest issues and concerns that should be addressed by GMA the following year.
    • Fall district meetings are held to facilitate informal dialogue between city officials, legislators and GMA staff.
    • District caucuses are held in January during GMA’s annual Cities United Summit in Atlanta and during the Annual Convention in Savannah in June.
