Secure Broadband & Digital Equity Investments for Your City

September 27, 2024

In a major step towards bridging the digital divide, Georgia has secured $1.3 billion in federal funding for broadband expansion, following the National Telecommunications and Information Agency's approval on September 26, 2024. This funding, managed by the Georgia Technology Authority (GTA) through the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program, presents an unprecedented opportunity to provide every Georgian with reliable and affordable broadband. Is your city ready to take advantage?

NOTE: The Georgia Technology Authority has not yet started accepting BEAD applications. A letter of support submitted to GTA or another office by your city will not count. Be sure to send it to the ISP/entity that is applying for the grant so that they can upload it to the portal once it opens.

Funding for Digital Equity

Georgia has also been allocated an additional $22.45 million for workforce training, access to digital devices, and enhancing digital literacy. Local governments are encouraged to apply for the Digital Equity Grant program to address broadband adoption and affordability challenges.

How Cities Can Prepare

While Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Electric Membership Corporations (EMCs) will likely be the primary recipients of BEAD funding, cities play a critical role in ensuring that their communities benefit fully. Partnering with ISPs and EMCs and aligning local broadband efforts with state priorities can make a substantial difference.
