Rep. Derrick McCollum
District 30

In a late amendment, Thursday, March 21st, before the State Senate, HB 516 was amended to add a Section 8 of the bill. Section 8 serves to preempt municipalities by prohibiting city police departments from using radar for speed detection on interstates unless the city limits include at least five miles of contiguous interstate highway. This amendment will make Georgia’s interstate highways less safe for motorists.  City police departments need the ability to respond to speeding in their communities and to reduce traffic accidents often caused by speeding vehicles.

GMA has no position on the other seven sections of the legislation. We strongly oppose the inclusion of Section 8.
