National League of Cities' Race, Equity, and Leadership (REAL) Program


Strengthening the capacity to build more equitable communities. Established in the wake of the 2014 unrest in Ferguson, MO, the REAL department offers tools and resources designed to help local elected leaders build safe places where people from all racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds thrive socially, economically, academically and physically.

Decatur students get historic marker approved to memorialize MLK’s arrest, release

The DHS students met with city leaders and activists to campaign for a new marker to highlight King’s ties to Decatur. The City of Decatur Commission formally backed the students’ proposal, signing on as a sponsor along with the Beacon Hill Black Alliance for Human Rights, a local community activism organization.
