Mission Statement

The purpose of the Youth Council is to empower youth to take an active role in public service by identifying community issues and creating practical solutions.

Selection Process

Applicants must submit an application and go through a panel interview process.

Words of advice to share with cities considering the establishment of a youth council

Young people play an important role in our communities. Connecting Youth and Civic Leadership is a great way to bring residents’ best ideas and recommendations to the attention of city policy-makers. Like many similar programs in the state of Georgia, our Youth Leadership Program offers training for young people who are interested in becoming future leaders. When starting a Youth Leadership Council, we advise you to take the following steps:

  • Build a framework
  • Find the money
  • Recruit high school students
  • Provide an orientation, and
  • Start training.

Union City’s Youth Leadership Council is a group of high school scholars working toward the common purpose of developing their individual leadership skills to strengthen their communities through volunteer service and increased communication with municipal leaders.
The Youth Leadership Council is more than just a service. Each member provide valuable insight on issues affecting youth and the community.

Event Description

See below comment from Christian Wiggins (FY19-20 Vice Present of Youth Leadership Council) regarding his March 2020 trip to Washington, DC (NLC Congressional City Conference).

“While working with Mayor and Council not only provided us with the opportunity to learn about community issues, but it also gave us the opportunity to observe what government leaders do. In March 2020, the youth council members attended the National League of Cities’ Congressional City Conference as youth delegates in Washington, DC. During the three day trip, we learned different ways to engage with the communities we serve, how to be more effective when working on various projects, and how to network with individuals who share similar interest. Having a seat at the table allowed us to return to Union City with valuable information and resources that lead to real and effective change within the community.”
