Serve on the Municipal Training Board
The Municipal Training Board provides oversight for the Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute, a training program designed to help city officials enhance their knowledge and skills in municipal related matters. The Municipal Training Institute is operated through a partnership between GMA and the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government.
Who is eligible to serve on the Municipal Training Board?
The Municipal Training Board is comprised of 17 seats, 15 of which are designated for municipal officials. Included within these 15 seats is a seat for a representative from each of GMA’s 12 districts, plus three at-large posts. Municipal elected officials who have at least 42 hours of training credits through the Holtz Municipal Training Institute are eligible to serve in one of the 12 district seats and two of the at-large posts. The third at-large post is designated for a city manager.
What is the term of Municipal Training Board membership?
Terms on the Municipal Training Board are four years, beginning July 1 and concluding June 30. Municipal officials are eligible to serve two terms on the Training Board, though the terms may not be consecutive.
How often does the Municipal Training Board meet?
The Municipal Training Board typically meets four times each year, including: in the fall; in January during the Cities United Summit in Atlanta; in the spring; and in June during the GMA Annual Convention in Savannah.
What are the expectations of Municipal Training Board members?
Members of the Municipal Training Board are encouraged to participate in all meetings of the Training Board as possible. Training Board members represent the interests of city officials’ in their GMA district and throughout the state as they relate to training matters. In addition, members of the Training Board provide updates on the Municipal Training Institute at GMA district meetings and assist with class check-in for training classes offered during the Cities United Summit and Annual Convention.
How can I become a member of the Municipal Training Board?
The Director of the Carl Vinson Institute of Government makes appointments to the Municipal Training Board in consultation with the GMA Executive Director.
