Firefighters from across Georgia were celebrated for their dedication and service during the 53rd Annual Firefighter Recognition Day and 18th Annual Legislative Appreciation & Awards Dinner. This annual event brought together state leaders, first responders, and fire service organizations to recognize the contributions and sacrifices of Georgia’s firefighting community. Georgia Municipal Association is proud to support these dedicated firefighters and chiefs and their continued efforts to protect and serve communities throughout the state.

The day began at the Georgia State Capitol, where lawmakers and officials gathered to honor fire service personnel. Commendations were presented to outstanding firefighters and industry leaders from the Georgia State Firefighters Association (GSFA), Georgia Association of Fire Chiefs (GAFC), Georgia Fire Inspectors Association (GAFIRE), and the Georgia Fire Investigators Association (GFIA). These awards underscored the critical role of firefighters in ensuring public safety and responding to emergencies across the state.

Chief Terry Smith, President of GAFC and Camden County Fire Rescue Chief, emphasized the significance of the event, stating, "2025 Firefighter Recognition Day was a standout event! We were privileged to have representatives from the Governor’s and Lieutenant Governor’s Offices, First Lady of Georgia Marty Kemp, Speaker of the House Jon Burns, Senator John Albers, State Representative Lauren W. McDonald, and Insurance & Safety Fire Commissioner John King join us. Their support highlights the vital role of our firefighters statewide."

GSFA President and Spalding County Fire Chief, Mike Byrd, echoed this sentiment, adding, "This year’s Firefighter Appreciation Day was a milestone. Legislators went above and beyond in recognizing the Georgia Fire Service, with both the Senate and House welcoming us on the floor. We look forward to growing this event next year to make an even greater impact on fire-related legislation."

Following the Capitol ceremony, over 200 fire service members and state legislators gathered at the Georgia Freight Depot for a celebratory barbecue dinner, expertly prepared by the Vienna Fire Department. The evening concluded with an Awards Ceremony, where top fire service achievements were recognized, celebrating individuals and departments that have gone above and beyond in their duties.
