Code of Conduct

  • I will commit to the responsibilities of the Decatur Youth Council (DYC).
  • I will dress and act in a respectful and professional manner.
  • I will be present and prompt to all meetings unless I have received an excused absence.
  • I will be open-minded and inclusive to other DYC members.

Selection Process

Each year in September, the City Commission appoints members to the Decatur Youth Council to serve a one-year term. Eligibility includes high-school aged students, regardless of school affiliation, provided they are residents of the City of Decatur. DYC members will be chosen based on academics, community service, leadership attributes, character, essay, and recommendations from adult references. Selected candidates will be called to schedule an interview.

Words of advice to share with cities considering the establishment of a youth council

While it’s important to establish a single point of contact for the students, don’t staff it with only one person. A team approach is needed so that no one staff member becomes overwhelmed with the creation of programming and leading meetings.
