Serving on the Federal Policy Council

The Federal Policy Council (FPC) is GMA’s federal legislative advocacy group. The primary purpose of the FPC is to maintain communications with the Georgia congressional delegation in support of GMA’s federal municipal policies. The FPC is chaired by GMA’s Second Vice President.

Eligibility

Elected and appointed municipal officials may be appointed to the Federal Policy Council. Each of the Georgia Congressional districts shall be represented by at least one member.

Number of Members

Approximately 40 city officials are appointed to serve on the Federal Policy Council each year.

Member Terms

Appointments to the Federal Policy Council are for one-year terms, beginning in July and concluding on June 30 of each year. City officials are eligible to serve multiple and consecutive terms.

Frequency of Meetings

The Federal Policy Council typically meets twice a year, once in January at the Cities United Summit in Atlanta and once in June at the GMA Annual Convention in Savannah. The meetings typically last one hour and feature guest speakers. GMA also periodically schedules Local Government Roundtable meetings with members of Congress in their Georgia district offices, and Federal Policy Council members are encouraged to attend these roundtable meetings.

Expectations of Members

Federal Policy Council members are expected to: provide advocacy on the Association’s major federal priorities and build relationships with the members and staff of Georgia’s Congressional Delegation throughout the year; to attend both meetings of the Federal Policy Council each year; to personally meet with their delegation members and staff at least once in the district; to exchange information with their delegation members and staff on an ongoing basis; and to provide feedback and input on how federal issues impact their cities to GMA staff.

Becoming a Member
