Mission Statement

The mission is to create a vehicle to give the youth training in public service, community service and leadership. There are 9 areas the Newnan Youth City Council should address:

  • Understanding local government
  • Understanding community issues
  • Understanding effective communication
  • Understanding and exercising leadership
  • Appreciating differences
  • Team building
  • Conflict management
  • Setting goals and effective decision making
  • Fun!

Selection Process

Newnan Youth Council applications are made available at the local high schools and youth civic organizations. Students are then required to fill out and turn in the applications. Applications are reviewed, interviews are conducted, and selections are made by the Youth Activities Commission.

Does group participate in overnight events?

We have taken several out of state trips to various conferences.

We require transportation and travel authorization forms and school and parental permission forms to be filled out completely and turned in prior to trips. All travel, transportation and trips is chaperoned by city staff and Youth Activities Commission members. We generally house 3 to 4 students per room on overnight stays with mandatory expections and consequences.

Words of advice to share with cities considering the establishment of a youth council

Research and borrow ideas from other youth council groups so you are not reinventing the wheel; however, tailor and style your own youth council group so that it meets the needs of what you would like to get accomplished. Be your own group. Don't copy someone else.
